First Place (woo hoo!) and Forgetfulness (boo!)

Nora entered a self portrait that she painted during the school year into a competition at the National Press Club. The competition was sponsored by the National Arts Program.

Nora won first place in her age category! Here's a picture of Nora with her painting & blue ribbon!

Non diabetes stuff going well. Diabetes stuff -- I'm a little frustrated. Daniel forgot his lantus a couple of times this week. Once he remembered it at 1:40 a.m. when he was already between 400 & 500 (the meters aren't so accurate when you get that high). He was spending the night at a friend's house. He took the lantus at that point, then at his regular time the next night because he didn't tell me what he had done. I would have had him take the lantus at 11:40, then earlier the next night.

Then he forgot it again last night (I was out at my yoga class). I found that out when my hubby asked me what Daniel's number was last night at bed time. I looked at him with that wide-eyed stare/glare that's supposed to pin a person to the wall and said, "I WAS AT YOGA." Then checked the meters. There was no bedtime reading.

So today he is checking every few hours and correcting as necessary. I try not to be a nag, honestly.
But am I allowed to leave the house? Can I let him leave the house? Is this just teenage brain? Can I scream now and will you all understand?

Taking the Good with the Not so Good

The good news:
Dominic does NOT have celiac, according to the blood test. Pizza is still on the menu.

Not so good:
Rain deluge+blocked gutter+blocked drain=water in basement. Hello out there, you rain makers? Can you try doing your rain-making thing in moderation next time?

Other news: We switched Daniel's lantus from evening to morning to see if it would clear out those dinner to evening highs. It has! The problem is, now he has breakfast to mid morning highs! I'll wait the full week to see if things change, but I have a feeling that this isn't working the way the endo had hoped.

Last news of the night: I'm taking a writing class, something to help improve the creative flow. At the first class my teacher, Candice, offered this lovely mind shift about writing. You have to think about going off to write as something wonderful, something like a great secret. Like an incredible love affair, or a vacation in paradise.

That notion has been stuck in my mind for the past 24 hours. It is delicious.

Up and Down Day

Daniel came home from school yesterday and said that he had an up and down day. “Not my blood sugars!” he was quick to explain.

First they had the PSAT test at school. Four hours of testing, he said. Long and boring. Boo! Plus, when he tested his blood sugar it read 350 (!!!) but he thinks that was a mistake because he forgot to change the code on the glucometer. But he was in the middle of the PSAT so he didn’t retest. And his lunch number was in range. Yay!

Then, for all the kids that were on time & completed the test, they had a party in the afternoon. Yay! Excellent! No classes! At the party they served cookies and soda. No diet soda. No other drinks. (Did I mention that at the homecoming dance last weekend there were only regular sodas?) Boo! So Daniel traded in his food tickets for raffle tickets, because there were also raffles being given out. Yay! And then, get this – he won a raffle! Yay! He goes to pick up his prize – and it is a $10.00 certificate to McDonalds. Boo! Not good for the diabetic celiac. So he gave it to a friend.

Later, he realized that this guy in one of his afternoon classes is the student government president. So Daniel pulled him aside & told him about the lack of diet sodas and the fact that he can’t have any. So the prez said yeah, that’s a really good idea (side note: I can’t believe that the constantly dieting teenage girls didn’t complain before this!!!) and he will make change and get diet sodas for the next event. Yay!

And the best yay is that we upped the lantus again last night and the 12 a.m. and the 3 a.m. numbers were finally in range. Hopefully we’ll be able to cut out one of those night time checks soon!

***I'm adding to this post later in the day. I took Daniel to his orthodontist appt. today. While we were waiting & waiting in the crowded room, Daniel felt low, so he tested. He was 68, but felt as though he was dropping so he had a few smarties to raise him up. There was a kid next to Daniel watching the whole thing -- the testing, the discussion with me about how many smarties to have, the counting out of the smarties. I could see in his eyes that he didn't quite understand what was happening, but that it was completely weird that some kid was eating candy right before his ortho appointment!
